Cybercrime Conference 2022

Over the past two years, economic and social life has continued to undergo a significant shift into the digital space in the course of the corona pandemic. Apart from a variety of desirable effects, this has also led to a considerable increase in opportunities for cybercriminals to commit offences. Russia's attack on Ukraine in violation of international law and the subsequent solidarity shown by various groups of perpetrators in support of the two warring parties, have exacerbated the threat even further in Germany as well.

The cooperation between the business community, society and the security authorities in fighting cybercrime is therefore of paramount importance. Technical, legal and social measures need to be developed and implemented together in order to successfully counteract cybercrime.

The increase in professional ransomware attacks poses a bigger challenge than ever, threatening companies and authorities alike. According to a study drawn up by the digital association Bitkom, the damage caused by extortion using stolen or encrypted data has increased by more than 450% within two years and compared to 2017, the damage has increased thirty-five-fold.

As an annual event hosted jointly by the Bundeskriminalamt and the Digital Society Institute at ESMT Berlin, the Cybercrime Conference (C³) is dedicated to facilitating an interdisciplinary exchange of experience between stakeholders from the fields of law enforcement, business and science.

The now 4th C³ places the topic

Ransomware and Future Threats

in the centre of this year's discussions

on the premises of the Digital Society Institute at ESMT Berlin,

Schlossplatz 1, 10178 Berlinon 9 and 10 May 2022.

On these two days, German and international speakers from the political, business and science communities will present latest findings and discuss comprehensive suppression approaches targeting ransomware. Another highlight of the conference will be the presentation of the National Cybercrime Situation Report 2021 by Martina Link, Vice-President of the Bundeskriminalamt.

The conference will be held as a hybrid event, with a limited number of persons present at the event location and the opportunity for others to attend the conference virtually. Simultaneous interpretation into German and English will be provided at the conference.
