An International Organisation down through the Years
The "International Criminal Police Organisation" (ICPO-Interpol), is the oldest multilateral framework for cross-border police co-operation. Following the United Nations, it is the second largest international organisation in the world.
One question which a lot of people probably ask themselves: In an age of a globally networked world and young dynamic organisations such as Europol, is an organisation like ICPO-Interpol with the outward appearance of a somewhat sedate elderly lady, still even necessary at least in Europe? The answer is short and simple: Yes!
The most important goals of the organisation, "to ensure and promote the widest possible mutual assistance between all criminal police authorities within the limits of laws existing in the different countries and in the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the promotion and expansion of all institutions which can effectively contribute towards the prevention and suppression of ordinary law crime ", have not changed de facto since its founding.
