Forensic science - Document crime - Typescripts - individual features The above illustration shows the letter “E” from an identity document in 2D and 3D views. By means of comparison, the illustration below shows an intact letter “E” held in the samples collection. By comparison, the form and peculiarity of individual features can be determined.

The investigation of documents also includes an examination of mechanically produced filled-in writing by use of the expert system AKIM (Automatic Coding and Identification of Typescripts). By means of pattern recognition, it allows for the classification of typescripts and the automatic determination of the variant of a typeface used.

By comparison of the characters with the electronically stored samples in the KTI collection, it can be determined which "typewriter" was used to inscribe the identification document, whereby the term "typewriter" used here includes, beside the classic models, all types of digital printing devices, such as dot matrix, inkjet and laser printers. Furthermore, through a comparison with the samples collection, it is possible to recognize individual features of the single characters, which in turn makes it possible to attribute the entries to a particular machine seized.
